The world-wide construction boom has brought about an unprecedented demand for increasingly efficient building solutions. At the same time, the building industry is faced with growing requirements for more environmentally friendly processes, materials, and technological solutions. The production of cement is one of the world's largest sources of CO2 emissions, although it has not received extensive attention in public. This definitely argues for the increased use of precast concrete solutions, such as hollow-core slabs and the excellent sandwich wall element. Precast concrete products consume less cement than cast-in-situ structures - it is no exaggeration to say that precast requires much less cement than alternative concrete structures, such as the double-wall and filigrane structures. The manufacturing of steel is another CO2 giant, and also less steel is needed in precast products compared to cast-in-situ. Improved residential conditions are being provided for people all over the world, but this development should be carried out bearing in mind sustainability in the long run. The sandwich wall element has long been considered an excellent choice for construction in the Nordic countries, as it effectively keeps the cold out and the warmth within. But did you know that cooling in fact consumes three times the amount of energy compared to heating? This in mind, the sandwich wall is just as potential a solution in countries with a hot climate. In the future, the thickness of thermal insulation will grow due to regulations demanded by local authorities in many countries. In Finland, new regulations come into force in 2010 and 2012. This development takes us towards ever better sandwich wall elements, for which Elematic has excellent production technology.
