Building your future opportunities

”Now this is sensible thinking and I couldn’t agree more,” says Elematic’s Managing Director Leo Sandqvist on reading Martin Clarke’s views on precast concrete. “For a long time now we have been talking about the numerous possibilities precast provides. It is environmentally friendly and with today’s technology, it enables the designing of unique, beautiful, and energy-efficient buildings.”

At the beginning of the 1990s in Eastern Europe, precast concrete was considered an unattractive and unwanted material. Today, public opinion on precast has changed dramatically. A good example is Moscow, where a multitude of beautiful precast buildings have gone up in the past few years. But it is not all about the good looks – the use of insulation in precast concrete wall panels is a major contributor to green construction. “The heating and cooling of buildings is one of the world’s largest source of carbon dioxide ,” says Sandqvist. The idea of recycling precast concrete materials is not new. During recent years in East Germany, for example, 25- to 30-year-old precast concrete buildings have been deconstructed and the materials reused for building villas. “But if precast concrete is to be leased or rented, it would require developers to become owners as well, or at least to join in at an early stage. In other words, the precast branch would need to undergo a series of structural changes,” says Sandqvist. “However, the global recession enables such changes, as the branch must renew itself in any case.” The threat he sees in the current recession is that “take-the-money-and-run” business increases, as there are suppliers of machinery and equipment that take advantage of the technological ignorance of manufacturers, new ones in particular. “Environmentally friendly production issues are not a priority to consultants that present themselves as experts on precast and only concentrate on closing the deal for their sponsors.” Sandqvist concludes: “At Elematic, we are currently launching our new extruder. The machine has been designed with an emphasis on energy efficiency and environmentally friendly materials. The recession has not stopped us from creating and building future opportunities for our customers.”
